Every day we communicate using complex linguistic and musical systems. This paper will
explore the role of sound and music in human communication and the cognitive, social, and
cultural processes which underlie such communication. The paper takes a broad,
interdisciplinary look at all aspects of sound and musical communication, from the semiotic
function of music to its application in a variety of communication contexts.

There is one 2 hour lecture per week in this paper and one 1 hour tutorial. All materials including resources, quizzes and listening material will be available on Moodle.

Students who successfully complete the course should be able to:

  • Students will appreciate the significance of language in the development of human communication, and will be able to identify and describe features of human language

  • Students will be able to identify and comment on a variety of composition styles and the techniques in which meaning has been communicated

  • Students will be introduced to select articulations of queer theory, queer methodologies and remediation relating to creative sound design and writing practice

  • Students will gain an understanding of the Chinese tonal system, and they will be able to identify and reproduce tonal patterns in the Chinese language
